How to become fluent in Thai?

Learn Thai with It's Time to Speak Thai

Hi! I’m Yelly, the founder of It’s Time to Speak Thai!
—and yes, my name comes from “jelly,” my grandma’s favorite snack!

I’ve always loved exploring new things. I started in the Science-Math track, but languages turned out to be my true strength—even though I once failed Thai in school! I later studied Thai at university, with English as my minor.

Everything changed when I discovered a course on teaching Thai to foreigners. That one class sparked a passion that’s kept me teaching for over 8 years.

I created It’s Time to Speak Thai! because I believe learning Thai should be practical, fun, and deeply human. Grammar is important—but it doesn’t have to be boring. This site is here to help you speak Thai with confidence, clarity, and joy.

FAQ

Thai can be challenging for English speakers, but with the right approach and steady practice, it’s absolutely learnable.

One major challenge is pronunciation, since Thai is a tonal language. A single word can have several meanings depending on the tone, and this takes some getting used to. The script can also feel intimidating at first because it’s completely different from the Latin alphabet—but many learners start with speaking and pick up reading and writing gradually.

On the bright side, Thai grammar is quite simple. There are no verb conjugations, plurals, or complex tenses, which makes sentence structures much more straightforward than English. Once you get the basic patterns down, building sentences becomes easier than you might expect.

From my experience, the hardest part of learning Thai—or any language—isn’t the language itself, but staying committed. Thai has its challenges, but the real key is consistency and confidence. I always remind my students that progress comes from showing up, not from being perfect. Believe it or not, I once failed Thai before becoming a Thai teacher! So I can say with confidence: don’t fear mistakes—they’re part of the journey. Keep practicing, stay curious, and enjoy the process.

You don’t need to learn the Thai script right away—especially if your main goal is to speak and understand Thai in everyday situations. For beginners, it’s often more helpful to focus on speaking and listening first. This builds confidence and helps you get used to the sounds, tones, and rhythm of the language. Many learners find that copying how native speakers talk and practicing real conversations is the most effective way to start using Thai naturally.

Once you’re more comfortable with the basics, learning to read and write Thai can be a valuable next step. Knowing the script helps improve pronunciation, makes tone rules clearer, and opens up access to Thai-language resources like menus, signs, and social media. For those who plan to live in Thailand long-term or study the language more deeply, learning the script is definitely worth the effort. It might seem intimidating at first, but with the right guidance, it’s very doable—and incredibly rewarding.

The time it takes to speak Thai fluently depends on your goals, consistency, and how much you use the language in daily life. With regular practice, many learners can hold basic conversations within 3 to 6 months. Reaching a more natural, confident level may take a year or more, especially if you’re not living in a Thai-speaking environment. Daily exposure—like listening, speaking, and thinking in Thai—can speed up the process significantly. It’s less about how many hours you study and more about how often and effectively you use the language.

Both self-study and taking lessons have their benefits, and the right choice depends on your goals and learning style.

Self-study is a great way to get started, especially if you enjoy learning at your own pace. There are many resources—apps, textbooks, and videos—that can help you build vocabulary and get familiar with Thai pronunciation. But Thai also has a unique script and a tonal system that can be tricky to master alone. Many self-learners struggle with pronunciation and confidence.

That’s where lessons can really help. A good teacher provides structure, explains cultural context, and offers real-time feedback—especially important in a tonal language like Thai, where a slight change in tone can completely change a word’s meaning. I’ve worked with students at all levels, and I’ve seen firsthand how guided practice speeds up progress and builds real confidence.

In my experience, combining both is the most effective approach. Use self-study to reinforce what you learn, and take structured lessons for a solid foundation and personalized support. My goal as a teacher is to make the journey smooth, practical, and enjoyable—so you can use Thai confidently in real life.

Thinking back to my university days, I remember studying English for years but still struggling to speak. It wasn’t about grammar—it was about confidence. One teacher who made a lasting impact on me was my speaking professor. He never corrected mistakes harshly; instead, he repeated my sentence the right way, allowing me to learn naturally without feeling embarrassed. That experience shaped how I teach today.

As a teacher, I create a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where students feel supported—like learning with a friend, not in a formal classroom. I believe confidence grows when students enjoy the process, so I focus on real communication rather than just textbook answers.

I also love using interactive activities, especially games, to make learning fun and effective. One of my favorites is based on the Codename board game—students describe words without saying them directly. It helps build vocabulary, creativity, and confidence—all while having fun!

Yes, I teach students at all levels—from complete beginners to advanced speakers.

When I first started teaching Thai as a private tutor, I thought the knowledge from my university classes would be enough. But my very first student, a general manager at a well-known company, never contacted me again after our first lesson. He even paid more than we agreed, which made it even harder to accept. I was unprepared and overwhelmed—but that experience pushed me to grow.

Determined to become a teacher students wouldn’t walk away from, I joined a language institute, where I learned everything from classroom management to designing effective lessons. I observed senior teachers, worked on structured curricula, and slowly gained confidence. Over time, I was trusted to teach at embassies—including the U.S., Korean, Australian, British, and French embassies—as well as companies like Mercedes, Prudential, and The World Bank.

As I worked with a wide range of learners, I realized how important well-designed materials and flexible teaching approaches are. That led me into curriculum design and content development, where I helped create effective resources for Thai learners. Eventually, I became a project manager overseeing educational content focused on Thai language learning.

Today, I tailor my lessons to each student’s level and goals. For beginners, I focus on useful vocabulary and everyday communication. For intermediate and advanced students, we work on sentence structure, fluency, and real-world conversations—whether it’s about daily life, news, or business. No matter your level, I’m here to support your learning journey with clarity, structure, and encouragement.
